The IPad in School

From the New York Times (Education Section)

As students returned to class this week, some were carrying brand-new Apple iPads in their backpacks, given not by their parents but by their schools.

A growing number of schools across the nation are embracing the iPad as the latest tool to teach Kafka in multimedia, history through “Jeopardy”-like games and math with step-by-step animation of complex problems.

As part of a pilot program, Roslyn High School on Long Island handed out 47 iPads on Dec. 20 to the students and teachers in two humanities classes. The school district hopes to provide iPads eventually to all 1,100 of its students.

The iPads cost $750 apiece, and they are to be used in class and at home during the school year to replace textbooks, allow students to correspond with teachers and turn in papers and homework assignments, and preserve a record of student work in digital portfolios.

“It allows us to extend the classroom beyond these four walls,” said Larry Reiff, an English teacher at Roslyn who now posts all his course materials online.

  1. The Ipad is COOL. It is. It's AWESOME. But I'll miss textbooks and paper and books with awesome bindings and ..... i don't like how everything is moving into technology. I'm one of those people who don't like change. I miss the old things. Like paper and textbooks, etc.....=.=

Plus, if we keep advancing in technology, eventually, we're gonna destroy ourselves. I hope that happens after all of my descendants die out....

  2. WOW!! I want one of those... it'd be great if we can use that at school. It'd be much easier to search for things than to go page by page.. Innovation is great!

  3. Woo hoo I love high-tech stuffs! I know right, we should all use Ipad instead of textbooks...And it saves paper! But the price is the major question in my opinion, not all of the students could afford the price. Haha I think I will go on FaceBook or play Angry Birds during the class...so, textbooks make me concentrate more :x

  4. I like! But cant we use notbooks? I mean while i dun wanna name anyone but when the "fruit punch" is talking we can play Call of Duty on our laptops, how awesome is that. Alright so I think education should be more high tech as it saves energy, trees, and paper, and time of course. But the price should be lowered for students and a complete overtake of traditional textbooks would take time and money. So high tech education is a great idea but whos gonna pay?

  5. Okay so at first sight I was like, $750??????? I thought it only costs $499? But anyway, an iPad probably still costs less than all the textbooks added together, especially if you're buying in Taiwan, it's like twice Amazon's price. With technology, we save a lot of paper, as well as trips to the hospital for a messed up spine. I mean seriously, it's insanely heavy if you have to walk home with history and math in your backpack. Add LA and then you have the two thickest textbooks in your bag. I'd love to have our textbooks on iPad, it's so heavenly light.
